Utsunoya Pass (Fujieda Side)

Hige Daimoku-hi (Bearded Subject Monument)

This stone monument is on the roadside of Tokaido Utsunoya Pass (on the Fujieda side). While the precise year of its original construction is unknown, there is an inscription on the back saying that it was rebuilt in 1835. On the side, it is engraved with a prayer for the safety of passing people and horses, so it has been preserved as a reminder of the way Tokaido was long ago.
