宇津ノ谷峠(藤枝側)

Neko Ishi (Cat Stone)

Located just a short hike up Tsuta no Hosomichi from Fujieda Trailhead. It is said to have been named for its resemblance to a cat lying down. There is another story saying that a traveler going over the pass heard the cries of a cat near the boulder and felt reassured because it reminded him of folk dwelling. It is often featured among famous landmarks of the Edo era (1603 – 1868), as well as ukiyo-e art and kabuki plays, having long been known as a symbol of Tsuta no Hosomichi.
