This yaoya (green grocer) is an old-fashioned store opened in 1934, where you can still enjoy idle chat while you shop. It got the name Honjin, meaning an inn officially designated as a lodging for traveling daimyo lords during the Edo period (1603 - 1868), because owner's ancestors once operated such an establishment in Fujieda-juku post town. With a focus on locally grown fresh produce, they have a fine selection of seasonal fruits and vegetables, such as watermelon in the summer, and high-sugar content mandarin oranges and strawberries in the winter. One of their most popular items is rice bran pickles, which they have sold continuously since the business was founded.
