In addition to wind and snow protection for travelers in winter and shade of trees in summer, a row of pine trees that is often depicted in woodblock prints also served as road signs. A row of pine trees from the Edo period remains along the Tokaido in the Kami-Aojima and Okabecho Utsutani districts, projecting an image of days past along the asphalt road.It is one of the cultural properties of Japan Heritage.
